Tribute to Bisi Fayemi at 50

She has many traditional titles and cognomens such as the Ochiora of Enugu, Erelu of Isan kingdom, Mother

General, Erelu Bambam, Bisi yato si Bisi etc, but she is popularly called Erelu Bisi Fayemi. She is the wife of the Governor of Ekiti State and an internationally acclaimed feminist social crusader. My first essay about this enigma was in April 2008 when she was honoured with the traditional title of Ochiora which means the leader of the people, the second was in July 2011 after she launched the Ekiti Development Foundation (EDF), a fund with which she has improved the lives of Ekiti women tremendously. This is the third article on the occasion of her 50th birthday celebration which she postponed till this October (she actually turned 50 in June 2013) because of the painful death of her close friend and sister, the late Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Mrs Funmilayo Adunni Olayinka, who passed away on April 6, 2013 and was buried on April 26, 2013.

My first encounter with her was on January 1, 2007 at Ibadan when on my way to Lagos, I visited Dr. Fayemi at home, the first time I would see him after we left the university almost 21 years after. When he saw me and my brother, Mojeed Jamiu, he stood up and hugged us one after the other and immediately called his wife and said: “Bisi, meet Hakeem, my school mate. He will be working with the rest of the campaign team.” Mrs Fayemi greeted us warmly and I noticed she was a pleasant person. We discussed for about 30 minutes and we proceeded on our journey to Lagos. I saw Mrs Fayemi after that encounter at the campaign office in Ajilosun a few weeks after five of us (Biodun Akin Fasae, Yemi Adaramodu, Fola Afolalu, Tai Oguntayo and I) had been inaugurated in February 2007 as members of the media committee of the Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation. She would come to the campaign office with bag loads of gift items from Ghana for us with words of encouragement about the impending elections in April. After we were robbed by the PDP of the gubernatorial mandate on April 14, 2007, she became more frequent in Ekiti and she virtually relocated from her Accra base, shuttling between Isan and the campaign office at Ado-Ekiti, mobilising, encouraging and empowering the women through her organisation at the time, the African Women Development Fund (AWDF).

We really got close in April 2008 when we accompanied her to Imezi Owa, Enugu where she was honoured with the title of Ochiora. We went together with Yemi Adaramodu (now Chief of Staff), Kunle Dada (Hagler) and Mrs Ronke Okusanya who led a delegation of other Ekiti women. Mrs Funmi Olayinka (of blessed memory) joined us by air in Enugu from Lagos and we were lodged at Robban Hotel. The night of the coronation was very interesting. Mrs Fayemi invited Adaramodu and I to her room where the late Mrs Olayinka joined us.

We didn’t know it was a ploy to prevent us from going out that night as the plan was leaked to her. Mrs Fayemi told us, “so Hakeem and Yemi, let us start gisting  joo!” Unknowingly, we entered the trap. We thought it was going to be a short gist, but we were wrong! Mrs Fayemi chose her best topic, Women Emancipation and the Beijing Conference. We discussed and debated that for more than one hour with drinks, meat and grilled fish flowing with it. The refrigerator was loaded and that was where I started suspecting that we had been “captured”. By the time we said we were going after about 2 hours, they both said: “What else do you want to go and do outside again? If it is drink, you cannot finish the ones here except you people have another agenda!” So we capitulated and stayed. Her friends and colleagues who came with her from Ghana joined us in the room and the gist became a mini party. I told them the story of how at the age of 10, I indulged in one of the pranks of young boys when we erroneously believed that you could charm a girl with a juju ring buried inside a lizard for seven days. One day, the ring was given to me to try on a girl we had all admired in our neighbourhood, but whom none of us had courage to talk to. So I was given the charm by my mates. I smacked the buttocks of the girl with the charm and instead of her to follow me as expected by the charm, she dealt me a dirty slap, and as I looked back for encouragement from my friends, they had disappeared. I was left alone to face the disgrace.

My story was very funny to them that all the women in the room laughed their hearts out! They said in unison, “it served you right!” We finally left the women about 1.00am for our rooms.

Mrs Fayemi was at the tribunal anytime she was in Ekiti and after the serial judicial losses at the various tribunals, she was a pillar of support for the struggle and she never wavered. She comforted the women, she gave them hope and she strengthened their courage and determination to remain steadfast in the struggle, assuring them we would triumph at the end, and this came to pass when victory was achieved on October 16, 2010. Her husband, Dr. Fayemi, was sworn in as Governor of Ekiti State and she officially became wife of the Governor. Before this, she had changed the lives of many African women, especially widows and the less-privileged through her organisation, the AWDF.

This is why she was honoured in Enugu where she has brought hope and smiles to widows, many of those who expressed their gratitude to her. On getting to government, she resigned as the President of the AWDF, and in 2011, launched the Ekiti Development Foundation (EDF) through which she has tremendously empowered Ekiti women. She has visited the 16 local government areas of Ekiti State more than thrice giving loans to women to improve their businesses, giving foodstuffs to widows and tools to artisans. She has paid medical bills of many indigent patients, both male and female; she inaugurated the Multiple Birth Trust Fund through which those who gave birth to twins and triplets were given financial support and future endowment funds. She is behind the food bank project and soup kitchen with a Non-Governmental Organisation whereby elderly and indigent Ekiti citizens were provided with foodstuffs, both raw and cooked.

She was recently on tour of markets in the state where she interacted with the market women, bought food items, provided them with measuring bowls, wallets and other souvenirs. She donated a bus for each market head in the 16 local government areas. She also listened to their plights and promised to communicate same to the governor, while she solved those she could immediately.  She is at home with all segments of women organisations in Ekiti State many of which chose her as their patron.

In government, she has remained her amiable and likeable self. In fact, it is glaring even to critics that Bisi Fayemi is not a run-of-the-mill First Lady who engages in frivolities. She is focused and levelheaded though sociable. In government, she is a problem solver and hates to see anybody short-changed or sad. She is an avowed and committed crusader of equity and social justice. It is a common saying in Ekiti that in Erelu Bisi Fayemi and her husband, we have two for the price of one because Ekiti people are enjoying the benefits of good governance from husband and wife who are passionate about their welfare. She does not only defend women, she is also a defender and lover of children, and no wonder, she was the brain behind the gender based violence law and the Child Right Act in Ekiti State. She has a pure heart and she is a cheerful giver and kind to a fault. I cannot remember the number of thank-you messages I have sent to her for one gift or the other during festivities and this she has been doing for many people before she got to government. Even though she is not infallible and has her own shortcomings which are human foibles like every other mortal, there is no iota of doubt that she is one of those human beings who will not willingly do wrong.

Her credential is intimidating yet. She is very humble and as gentle as a dove. She is in the league of world female leaders such as President Hellen Sirleaf of Liberia and former South African First Lady, Mrs. Graca Mandela who had on many occasions graced the events of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) which she headed until she resigned. Bisi Fayemi had received standing ovation on the floor of the General Assembly (UNO) for her efforts through the AWDF to make life better for African women. She narrowly missed the African Leadership Hunger Prize Award in 2008 when she was nominated.  On April 5, 2011, she was presented with the David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of philanthropy. With this award, Mrs. Fayemi joined the rank of past winners such as former South African President, Nelson Mandela, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Sheela Pattel, Fazle Hasan and Queen Rania. In 2011, she was appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) by the Federal Government. She was listed in March 2012 as one of the 100 personalities working for the advancement of women and girls in the world. Her contribution to important national discourse was very key such that President Goodluck Jonathan noticed her absence during a discussion about HIV/AIDS in Abuja when the President asked: “Where is the wife of Ekiti State Governor? I enjoyed her contribution the last time she was here.”

As we celebrate this woman of substance, we in Ekiti are proud to call her our own and we thank God for sparing her life till this day. We wish her Happy Birthday and many more prosperous years of service to humanity.

MICHAEL OPEYEMI BAMIDELE PURPORTED STEWARDSHIP: A BETTER REVELATION.

For months now, Ekiti State has been under public centre-piece .This time not overly linked to Ido-Osi panorama but because of the different reports and unfolding events coming out in the Newspapers, Radio and Television.
The reflection of the ostensible issue between Opeyemi Bamidele and some social critics is of heavy concern to good people of Ekiti. The crisis rocking the political shape of the state formerly known as ‘Fountain of Knowledge’ and now called the ‘Land of Honour’ is in defiant situation and cannot be over-emphasised by any agent, the teaming youths and the political bigwigs in the state. One can only trace the crisis to the insinuation by Opeyemi Bamidele’s assumed ambition to contest next Governorship election in the State.
However, as the trend goes on, our attention has been drawn to a Newspaper publication published on the pages of three Newspapers of Wednesday, September 4, 2013 with the caption “LETTER OF PROTEST AGAINST YOUR ANTI-PARTY ACTIVITIES FROM ADO EKITI & IREPODUN/IFELODUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS, EKITI CENTRAL FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY 1, EKITI STATE.” The publication explained and expressed fear and dissatisfaction about the quality of leadership he displayed on behalf of good people of Ekiti at the House of Representative, Abuja. The report debunked the claims by the account given by MOB to be frivolous and full of lies.
This is the account of his claimed 57 projects that has been executed in Ekiti State which was according to him was divided into 2012 & 2013 appropriation acts, hence 2012 having thirty-three (33) projects, while 2013 comprised of twenty four (24). But in his latest interview, while giving his account of stewardship in Lagos the numbers of the projects rose to 60. However, Opeyemi Bamidele’s claim was faulted; it was described as spurious and non-existent, present only on paper. This widely circulated advertorial became a huge concern to us. We remained discontented until the truth about this report is ascertained because of the personality of Opeyemi Bamidele, popularly known as ‘the promise keeper’ whose words and character has a long standing history with the people of Lagos where he served for  12 years and his constituency back in Ekiti.
It however dawned on us as an independent Observer and Journalist who is bent on unravelling the truth by investigating thoroughly the issue. What aroused our concern was the silence at MOB’s camp. After the widely circulated advertorial, his camp have not been able to come out to refute the serious allegations raised in the advertorial. Therefore, we decided to dig into the accusation and counter accusation to re-affirm our interest in the long standing peaceful co-existence evident in Ekiti State before the rumoured ambition of the Iyin Ekiti born Politician, a lawyer and a former two-time commissioner in Lagos State.

The man, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele popularly known as MOB, was elected member of House of Representative to represent Ekiti Central Constituency I.
Available to us are the detailed account of stewardship programme of Michael Opeyemi Bamidele which took place in Lagos, coupled with the placed advertorial, which to a great extent has ben a subject of debate on the social media and which has also open up an expository can of his personality.
MOB: The Known Promise Keeper.
His stewardship was consequently placed under public scrutiny; it gave some political analysts a resounding false hope. So, it  behoves on us as one of his admirers to embark on a clarity mission, investigate his promises, his projects and programmes as spelt out in his manifesto.
Our organisation, REFLECTOR, is based in Lagos and it took us five (5) comprehensive days to visit sites and villages where his projects are supposedly located.

OUR FINDINGS: AT IGEDE EKITI

The picture above is the purported health Centre at IGEDE, our finding reveals the project has been abandoned for almost 14months.
At Igede Ekiti, our fact finding team visited the Primary Health Centre which was reported by MOB to have cost N12,865,650. The project has been abandoned according to an eyewitness present during the capturing of the above image. Also according to a local government staff that claimed anonymous, explained clearly that the project was launched almost 2years now and the people are expectant of the commissioning.
Our team also tried hard to locate the site of the Ile-Ona Borehole but to no avail. This may not necessarily mean the “Promise keeper” has given a false account but it is important to feed the public the true and concise events as at when we visited. The borehole was announced to have been sunk at a cost of N2,250,000.

IROPORA EKITI

The front-view and the side-back view of Iropora Palace, MOB claim to have sunk a borehole worth N2,250,000 but was not found as at the time we visited the palace as at 12th September,2013.

IWOROKO

Reflector found the project completed in front of Alaworoko’s Palace but not in good shape, the borehole is not functioning, it has been abandoned. The borehole was in tune of N2,250,000.

IGBEMO EKITI
Provision of motorised (Overhead tank) Borehole at Igbemo EkitiN6,700,000

Reflector authoritatively gathered through the General Secretary of Igbemo Community in Igbemo Ekiti and one of the high Chief in the community that the Motorised Solar borehole have not been operated since completion.

IYIN EKITI
Construction of ICT and vocational Training Centre at Ibedoyin quarter, Iyin EkitiN32,001,125

This is the purported ICT vocational Centre expressly forecasted as part of his completed project. Reflector found the project uncompleted and abandoned in the bush in a very deteriorating condition. This is supposed to have cost a whopping N32,001,125

Finally some of the highlighted project above that did not appear in details was unfounded when Reflector visited all the mentioned towns and villages. Of importance was the bashing from Olori of Igbemo community, who denied MOB claims that he has cited a newly constructed health centre in Igbemo. She challenged the lawmaker to always come out plain and simple to his people and not deceitful. Also, in Are, effort to locate the announced 300KVA transformer was fruitless , the people of the community denied such a project, Reflector had to leave the community when the people ran out of patience and raining curses on the lawmaker.
It will also interest the public and the people of Ado Ekiti especially resident of Oke Ila community to Adebayo. Reflector under the scorching sun was unable to cite any high-tension electricity pole and transformer claimed to have been in place by the ‘Promise keeper’.
Similar there was nothing like ICT  and Vocational Training centre in Ado–Ekiti Local Government Secretariat as claimed by our promise keeper.

Communities in Ekiti East Lay 2014 Requests Before Fayemi

Various communities in Ekiti East Local Government have laid their requests which are to be incorporated into the 2014 budget before the Fayemi administration.

The requests were made during Governor Kayode Fayemi's tour of the communities which witnessed a large turn-out of people, whose excitement was visible judging from the rousing welcome they gave the governor.

In line with the Fayemi administration's tradition of making an all-inclusive budget, the governor embarks on a tour of all communities in the state every year to interface with the people on their needs preparatory to making a new budget and to also know how well government has imparted the communities.

At Araromi-Ugbeshi, the people requested for the tarring of their inner city roads, 20 boreholes, 5 transformers and electricity extension, a government college, appointment of their sons and daughters into government positions and autonomy.

Responding, Governor Kayode Fayemi said he only ratifies autonomy, adding that he alone does not grant autonomy to communities.

He said the Araromi-Ugbeshi community should forward their memorandum to the government with evidence that it has always been a distinct community from time immemorial.

He also promised that his government would take a critical look at their various requests to know which ones can be accommodated in the 2014 budget.

The situation was not dissimilar in Kota, Araromi-Oke, Omuo-Oke, Omuo-Ekiti, Ayegunle, Ikun-Oba, Ilasa-Ekiti and Eda-Ile where they also presented written documents stating their requests for 2014.

The communities were full of praises for the Fayemi administration, even as they pledged their continued support for the administration.

The traditional ruler of Kota, Oba Kayode Fagbemi, said his community would forever be grateful to the Fayemi administration for "healing their age-long wound" by granting it autonomy.

Oba Fagbemi commended the style of governance of Dr. Fayemi which he described as second to none in the country, adding that the people of Kota have never had it so good given the various development efforts of the government in the community.

He assured the governor that his community would repay him with votes come 2014.

The governor inspected ongoing work at the town's civic centre which is one of the self-help projects for which the government gave out grants in July.

He said he was impressed that the community had already done a lot before the intervention of government and urged other communities to emulate Kota.

At Ilasa-Ekiti and Araromi-Oke, the governor inspected ongoing work at the palaces that are being renovated with the grants that the community received from government under the grants-in-aid programme tagged "Ajose Eyi Yato".

He also commissioned a viewing centre at Ikun-Oba and a community centre and 12 units of lock-up shops built by EKSCDA in Araromi-Oke.

At Eda-Ile, Dr. Fayemi commissioned a staff quarters for workers of the Health Centre in the community

The Eleda of Eda-Ile, Oba Moses Adeniran, urged the government to help with new structures in the primary school in the community, linking up of the community with other communities in the state besides Omuo and assistance in the building of a new palace.

Oba Adeniran, who said there is no community where the impact of the Fayemi administration has not been felt, commended the government for the electrification of his community.

The people of Omuo-Oke, on their part, requested for the construction of Igashi road and the extension of electricity to some parts of the community.

They also urged the government to speed up the completion of the community's portion of the 5 kilometre-road in Ekiti East.

Governor Kayode Fayemi rounded off Friday's tour with  a visit to Olomuo's palace.

Ekiti Self-Help Projects: Ongoing Renovation at Alasa's Palace, Ilasa-Ekiti

Photospeak: Ekiti Self-Help Projects

These are pictures of the Alasa's Palace that is being renovated under the Ekiti community self-help projects.

The demand of Ilasa-Ekiti when communities were being given grants was that it be
given money for the renovation of their palace.

Work is ongoing at the palace.

In my interaction with the chiefs, I discovered that handymen (artisans) from the community are employed to the the job. This has fulfilled the objective of the Fayemi administration to create jobs for rural dwellers.

His Excellency, Governor Kayode Fayemi will be inspecting work at the palace this morning and he will also be meeting the people of Ilasa to know the demands for next year preparatory to making the 2014 budget.
