Speaking at this year's New Year Inter-Religious Thanksgiving Service, the governor said despite the attendant tensions, politicians must of necessity conduct themselves peacefully and refrain from anything that could truncate the existing peace in the state.
"This is a crucial year, a year of decision. Our prayer is that the peace that has been present with us will endure for ever. As politicians, tensions are likely to rise, but my plea as the Governor of the state is that we also have to lead by example, and we have to urge those who are seeking elective positions and their supporters to uphold. Let everyone contesting talk to the people, convince them. We do not need to force ourselves on our people. We do not need to lie. We do not need to embellish. We do not need to exaggerate. Let us leave it to our people," he said.
Governor Fayemi said politicians often assume that they are wiser than the electorate, thereby resorting to lies, exaggeration and unnecessary propaganda in a bid to mislead the people.
He gave assurance that his government would not substitute governance for politics in spite of the forthcoming governorship poll in the year.
"I want to tell our people that politics will not replace governance in Ekiti. Governance will continue. There are people who are expectant of the promises that government has made. You still have a right to demand those promises to be fulfilled. Our prayer is that the term of office will be renewed, but pending that time, we still have a lot of work to do for the people. Let me assure our people that all promises that we made will be fulfilled. Our words are our bond. Yes, resources are limited, but the God that has helped us to deliver dividends of good governance to our people will continue to be with us," the governor added.
He had earlier explained that the essence of the inter-religious thanksgiving service was to thank God for his mercy, grace and love.
Governor Fayemi urged everyone to remain ceaselessly prayerful at all times.
In his sermon on the occasion, the Archbishop of Anglican Diocese, Abe, thanked God for the existing peace in Ekiti and urged all stakeholders to work for the sustenance of the peace.
Another cleric, Alhaji Abdulraheem Olowoyo, popularly known as Arikewuyo, noted that Governor Fayemi was the first to gather people of all faiths to thank God in the state.
He commended the governor for his sterling performance and prayed that God would battle all those planning to foment trouble in the state, especially because of the fast-approaching governorship poll.
The Chief Missioner of Ansar-u-deen in Ekiti State, Alhaji Hadi Ameen, said one of the 17 laws given to Prophet Mohammed by Allah was the fulfilment of promises, adding that both the governed and those in government should fulfil promises made to each other.
Alhaji Ameen commended Governor Fayemi for fulfilling his promises and for making Ekiti State better than he met it, urging the electorate to compensate him with their votes.
