FAYEMI/COMPASS NEWSPAPER LIBEL SUIT: COURT RULES IN FAVOUR OF FAYEMI

A high Court Judge siting in Ado Ekiti has ruled in favour of Governor
Kayode Fayemi on the libel suit filed against Compass Newspaper, for
their malicious and frivolous publication against the State Government
and Dr Fayemi.

The case is about a story published by the newspaper with the title: "HELP! FAYEMI IS DEDUCTING 1BILLION NAIRA FROM LG ACCOUNT MONTHLY".

They also published that the  Governor withdrew N25O Million from
Government Account to bribe Justices of the Supreme Court to seek favour
from them because of his pending case in the Supreme Court with Engr
Oni.

The Claimant called two witnesses who established that the publications were false.

The Compass abandoned their Statement of Defence because the only witness, the Company Secretary, was not called
to give evidence.

The Court found that the Compass was reckless and malicious in their
Publication and that failure to retract and apologise to the Governor
is despicable and it awarded 2 Billion Naira Aggravated Damages
against the daily and public apology to be published in Compass and at
least 2 National Dailies. And of course to retract the offending
publications.
